In this work from 1970, filmed after "The Conformist" (1970), Bernardo Bertolucci transposes a short story by Borges, called "Theme of the Traitor and the Hero", to the Po Valley, in Italy. Athos Magnani returns to his hometown and finds the monument to his father vandalized. This leads him to get involved in the search for the truth about his life and his ideas. The world that Athos explores is saturated with mysteries, premonitions, ambiguities, and signs of incipient madness, striking elements in Borges`s work, which receives one of the best cinematographic adaptations from Bertolucci`s experienced hands.
