Manoel de Oliveira pays tribute to director and script writer Luís Buñuel and to Jean-Claude Carrière, script writer of Belle de Jour, of 1967. He highlights two of the strangest characters in the original film and revives them 38 years later. The male character holds a secret that is of crucial importance to the state of mind of the female character. They meet once more. She tries to evade him. He follows her and holds her attention to reveal the said secret. She wants to know what he had told her husband when he was mute and paralyzed - a tense situation. He satisfies his sadism with vengeance all his own
