Hsiao Kang sells watches in the streets of Taipei for a living. He has just lost his father, and his mother has not yet assimilated the loss and spends hours at prayer, with the assistance of a monk, so that his spirit may come back. She actually comes to believe that her husband has reincarnated in the shape of a cockroach. Hsiao falls in love with a customer, Shiang-chyi has just arrived from France and is trying to buy a watch from him that was not among the samples. He tries to find a similar one for her. Meanwhile, he becomes obsessed and tries to set all the clocks in Taipei to Paris time. In France once more, Shiang-chyi comes up against strange events that relate to Hsiao.
