Judge Jeanne Charmant Killman is assigned to looking into a case of corruption in business revolving around Michel Humeau, the president of an important industrial group. Taken up with questioning - coldly, with conviction - she realizes that procedures will inevitably bring out a series of secrets involving the higher echelons of power. Concomitantly, because of the heavy pressure she is under from the investigation, her personal life is under strain. She will have to face two important dilemmas: can she stand to augment her professional worth without surrendering to a greater force? And will human nature be able to cope with inebriating power? The plot is based on a political and financial scandal in France that became known as "Affaire Elf".
