At the age of 11, Li Cunxin was taken from a poor Chinese village to study ballet at Madame Mao’ dance school in Beijing. In 1979, he manages to get in the Houston Ballet Company during a cultural exchange program in Texas, where he begins a new and free life. The Chinese officials try to take him back to China, but a legal maneuvering and a marriage to an American dancer keep him in the USA.
