In a carriage traveling full tilt, two girls rip up their dresses to pass for men. They are Princess Aspasia and Corinna, her lady-in-waiting. From her father, Aspasia has inherited a throne usurped, that by rights belongs to Prince Agis with whom the princess is madly in love. Her plans are to win him, marry him, and thus restore the throne to the true heir. Only, Agis has been brought up to hate her and to learn to live only by reason, according to the teachings of philosopher Ermocrates and his sister Leontine.
