A soldier on the limits between war and peace is a tragic theme and typically Russian. This short film is a kind of outline, a lyric study for the documentary Spiritual Voices on militarism and the ever-present threat of conflict that broods over the Russian soul. A Soldier’ Dream was filmed on the borders of Tajikistan with Afghanistan and shows young soldiers in their daily duties patroling, bearing with them the paradox of being there to ensure tranquility and safety. Sokúrov says that this film was made as a tribute to film critic and historian Dr. Hans Schlegel. “He was of extreme importance in my development and that of many other film makers in Eastern Europe.”
