Young Padre Amaro, has just been ordained. Soon he is to go to Rome to continue his studies because of the good connections he has with the bishop. Before this, however, he must work in a parish. He is sent to Los Reyes, where he is to answer to Padre Benito, a parish priest who apparently leads a corrupt, contradictory existence. There, Amaro meets beautiful, devoted Amelia, daughter of Sanjuanera, the owner of the best restaurant in town and mistress to Padre Benito. In face of the real world, Amaro is confronted with the hipocrisy of the church that condemns guerrilla warfare but co-exists with the lords of the drug traffic. The film is based on the classic book by Eça de Queiroz.
