Sicily, Italy, the early twentieth century. Salvatore Mancuso is decided: he will start life anew in the New World. He sells off everything he possesses to finance the trip, with his children and his old mother, to a place where there will be more work and an opportunity for all. The chosen destination is New York. A mysterious atmosphere precedes the journey. From the farewell rituals, to his mother?s energy - she is all of a sudden able to cure the inhabitants of the village where they live, that have come down with a strange disease - all would seem to advise them to stay. But nothing will deter the Mancuso family in their determination to emigrate. The film was the winner of the Silver Lion for a Revelation at the 2006 Venice Film Festival.
