Tobias has just been ordained a priest and wants to make the world a better place. Brimming with energy and good will, he takes over a parish in a poor district far away and realizes that his middle-class education is not adequate for the hard reality he encounters. He is soon sorry he did not study psychology as his parents would have liked. He meets Carola, very wise, but who never had a formal education. He falls in love and, for the first time, feels he is alive; however, a vocational dilemma for religion holds more challenges in store for him.
