Adapted from the novel by Machado de Assis. The story of the deceased-author Brás Cubas, which decides, a after dying, to write about the most important moments of his life: his childhood, the first love of his youth, the love for a married woman, the dream of becoming a politician, his vanities. The irony and intelligence of the book are incorporated in the film, as well as the habits and the landscape of old Rio de Janeiro.
