On request of Alfredo Bini, producer of The Gospel According to St. Matthew, in June, 1963, Pasolini and dom André Carraro visited some of the sacred sites described in the Bible. For fifteen days, they journeyed throughout Jordan, Galilee, Syria and, especially, Nazareth, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem. Pasolini, however, was not convinced that these were the best scenes for the film, and the settings were not used. Pasolini only made a point of including his comments on the scenes.
