In late 21st century, global warming has caused the polar ice caps to melt, submerging all coastal cities across the planet. Meanwhile, the human race continues to advance technologically, producing androids (called mechas) to serve all sorts of purposes. When Monica’s young son is cryogenically frozen due to having a lethal disease, she decides to adopt a replacement child: David, the first mecha prototype with the ability to have human emotions. Despite David’s everlasting love for his mother, things soon change when Monica’s real son is cured and returns home. Based on Brian Aldiss’ short story Super-Toys Last All Summer Long. JH: Kubrick loved this story about robots becoming cleverer than their former masters and about the human need for scapegoats. We are never at fault about our misery. Here we blame the machines we made and need to destroy them in an almost religious ritual. And at the end humanity has gone, vanished, we are not even told why, it is given, a minor detail. Only robots survive as witnesses of a long gone human ingenuity. A wonderful film Kubrick offered to his friend Steven Spielberg, believing that Steven would be the better director for this. Kubrick would have loved the result.
