Around the turn of the twentieth century, young Nicolai is travelling from Moscow to Paris to study medicine and learn to speak French. On the way, he stops at a hotel, also serving as a brothel and sanatorium, near Leipzig. There, he meets the beautiful courtesan Elise and falls deeply in love with her, prolonging his stay. After a few days, it becomes obvious that this love is threatened: Elise "belongs" to the old Count, who also owns the hotel.
