Drama and suspense mix in this film based on the eponymous novel by Robert Graves, written in 1926. The plot is about an inmate of an asylum who believes he has the power to kill someone with a scream. During a cricket match at the asylum, the mysterious Charles tells the writer his whole story. It all begins when he meets the couple Anthony and Rachel and invites himself to lunch at their house. From then on, he starts playing with the two, driving them to the brink of madness. He demonstrates the power of his scream to Anthony and then makes love with Rachel. Anthony, however, finds a way to make Charles`s powers turn against himself.
