Spain, 1944, and the end of the Civil War: Carmem is newly-wed and moves with her daughter Ofélia to the home of her new husband, authoritarian Vidal, a captain in Franco?s armies. The child is scared and takes refuge in a mysterious labyrinth where she finds Pan, a magical creature. He tells Ofélia she must accomplish three dangerous tasks to go back to being a princess once more. The film alternates between the fantastic (a child?s world) and sheer terror (war).
