Among the motherhood kingdom, the main player is Adelina Gomes – a poor woman originating from a peasant family who has been confined to a mental institution since the late 1930s. At the age of 18, Adelina fell in love with a man, but the wedding was forbidden by her mother. As a demonstration of rebellion, she strangles the family’s pet cat and is diagnosed as a schizophrenic. Throughout the film, we see sculptures and paintings Adelina made at the art studio located inside the Occupational Therapy Department of the National Psychiatric Facility, organized by Nise da Silveira in 1946.
