Carmen is a "bonobo", a relative of the chimpanzee. She is the best pupil in an institute where her communication skills are being developed by means of symbols. Away from the institute, she is to discover ferocious behavior, hunger, and the ambiguity of human beings. Carmen is consigned to a cage and makes visual contact with Mercier, a father-to-be.
