According to Raquel de Queiroz, a trucker is the king of the road : a bon vivant with his truck for a home, the road for ground, and the sky for a roof. In addition, also, a woman at each gas station. But is this really true? Truckers took to the road to show another reality. Hypnotized by the magic of the highways, Brazilian truckers cut the country from end to end carrying over one half of all of the cargo transported in Brazil. Nine hundred thousand workers are estimated to be engaged in a day-to-day struggle for survival. They traverse roads in makeshift conditions, appeal to divine protection to get by the violence of stolen cargo, constant risk of death, and consumption of “arrebite”, a remedy to keep this army awake and at the wheel for hours on end.
