When Bessie?s stepfather locks her out of the house, she takes refuge in the house of Victor, whom she had met before, at a ball. They spend the night together, and the boy decides he will marry her, Bessie, and not his fiancée, Fennella. When Victor is about to announce his decision to his father, a judge, he finds his father dead. Alick, Victor?s friend, is also in love with Bessie; nevertheless he takes it upon himself to break the news to her mother that she is pregnant. Victor becomes a judge in place of his father and will have as his first case a lawsuit against Bessie, accused of killing her baby.
