João is 12 years old and lives on the banks of the Douro River with his unstable father, António, who struggles with alcoholism. In the house next door live Teresa and her teenage daughters, Paula and Liliana, for whom João feels a deep affection. The five of them form a kind of dysfunctional family, bound together by an artisanal routine of fishing and selling lamprey. However, in a year plagued by drought and the effects of climate change, the business proves barely sustainable — and António’s erratic behavior makes the situation increasingly untenable.
