Chou is a sensitive teenager who wants to gain his independence. However, the crisis resulting from Chinese military tests in the Taiwan Strait in 1996 shakes his family’s finances and exacerbates the tense atmosphere at home. In secret, he starts working at a billiard hall and bonded with Button, a gang leader. When his father discovers that he is smoking and working there, their relationship deteriorates even further. At school, Chou is in love with Min, a young student from another class. With the girl’s departure, driven by fear of war, and pressure from one of his teachers, who tries to force him to drop out of school, his uncertainties about the future increase.
