Ben, a singer in his forties, is losing his voice, his faith, and his purpose following the sudden death of his novelist wife. He struggles not to disappoint his rabbi, his congregation, and his two Jewish mothers. An old acquaintance reappears in his life: the spirited Carla, who was his music teacher in school and is now about to become his Bat Mitzvah student. Though reluctant at first, Ben realizes that this unlikely friendship may be exactly what he needs to regain control of his life.
