Seventeen-year-old Jem Starling lives in a fundamentalist Christian community in rural Kentucky. She struggles to define her place within, and is constantly worried about sinful actions, and in a conflict between her own sexuality and religious devotion. Everything changes with the return of Owen, an enigmatic youth pastor, by whom she feels immediately attracted. Slowly, he draws her into a dangerous relationship that could upend their entire community.
