Vladlena Sandu

She is a filmmaker and theatre director born in Crimea, Ukraine, in 1982. Her work explores war trauma, dictatorship, Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism, and human trafficking. After her parents divorced, she moved to her mother’s native city of Grozny in the Chechen Republic. She lived through four years of war as a child and teenager. In 1998 she emigrated to mainland Russia and received the status of an Internally Displaced Person. She studied film directing at the VGIK, in Moscow, and she graduated from Boris Yukhananov’s Studio of Independent Direction. In March 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine she became a refugee for the second time. Today she lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She directed short films such as “Diyana” (2012), “Holy God” 2016), and “Eight Images from the Life of Nastya Sokolova” (2018), screened in film festivals such as Berlinale, Rotterdam and DOK Leipzig. “Memory” is her feature film debut.
