
Shohei Imamura was born in Tokyo in 1926. After graduating from Waseda University, he began working at Shochiku Ofuna Studio. He was an assistant to directors Yasujiro Ozu and Yoshitaro Nomura, and made his directorial debut in 1958 with “Stolen Desire”, beginning a career that was recognized worldwide. The filmmaker was honored at the 21st Mostra with a retrospective that brought together films that marked his career: “My Second Brother” (1959), “Pigs and Battleships” (1961), “The Insect Woman” (1963), “Intentions of Murder” (1964), “The Pornographers” (1966), “A Man Vanishes” (1967), “Profound Desires of the Gods” (1968), and “The Ballad of Narayama” (1983), winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He also directed features such as “Vengeance Is Mine” (1979), “Why Not?” (1981), “Zegen” (1987), “The Eel” (1997), which also received the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and “Warm Water Under a Red Bridge” (2001). Imamura passed away in 2006.
