
Born in Karachi, India, in 1947. He began his career in 1971, directing the film “Andaz”. His most famous work, “Sholay” (1975), is a cultural phenomenon often referred to as the “greatest Indian film of all time”, blending the action of Hollywood Westerns with Indian storytelling. He also directed “Shaan” (1980) and “Shakti” (1982). In 2013, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, one of the nation’s highest civilian awards, for his contributions to cinema.
