
Born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1963. Graduated in philosophy from Sogang University, where he started a film club and wrote reviews on contemporary cinema. One of the most important South-Korean directors, he made films like “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” (2002), “Oldboy” (2003), winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, and “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” (2005) — all screened at the 37th Mostra — as well as “I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK” (2007), awarded at the Berlin International Film Festival, “Thirst” (2009, 33rd Mostra), which won the jury prize at Cannes, “The Handmaiden” (2016, 40th Mostra) and “Decision to Leave” (2022), which won the best director award also at Cannes.
