Born in 1956 in Manchester, England. He was the director of the National Theatre in London from 2003 to 2015, and now is the artistic director of London Theatre Company. He has directed opera for the Royal Opera and English National Opera, in London, Opéra de Paris and Théâtre du Châtelet, and Bayerische Staatsoper, in Munich. He has directed feature films like “The Crucible” (1996), presented at the Berlin International Film Festival and nominated to the Oscars for best adapted screenplay and best supporting actress, and “The Object of My Affection” (1998). With screenwriter Alan Bennett, he directed the features “The Madness of King George” (1994), winner of the BAFTA for best British film, “The History Boys” (2006), and “The Lady in the Van” (2015, 39th Mostra).
