
He was born in Algeria in 1934. One of the most prominent figures in contemporary Arabic cinema, he worked as a director, screenwriter, producer, editor, and cinematographer. In 1966, he directed his first feature film, “The Winds of the Aures”, which earned him the award for best first film at the Cannes Film Festival. He then directed “Hassan, Terrorist” (1968), “Décembre” (1973), “Chronicle of the Years of Fire” (1975), the first Arab and African film to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes, “Sandstorm” (1982) and “La Dernière Image” (1986), both presented at Cannes, and “Crépuscule des Ombres” (2014). Lakhdar-Hamina passed away in May 2025, in Algeria.
