
Born in Recife in 1968, he studied journalism at the Federal University of Pernambuco. He was a film critic and journalist. He oversaw the cinema section of the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation for 18 years and, currently he is the artistic director of the Janela Internacional de Cinema in Recife and chief film curator at the Moreira Salles Institute. As a filmmaker, he moved from video in the 90s, trying his hand at fiction, documentary and music videos, to digital and 35mm in the 2000s. He made short films like “Vinil Verde” (2004), “Eletrodoméstica” (2005), “Friday Night Saturday Morning” (2006), and “Cold Tropics” (2009), which won over one hundred awards in Brazil and abroad, and the documentary “Crítico” (2008). “Neighboring Sounds” (2012, 35th Mostra), his first feature-length fiction film, won the critics’ prize at the Rotterdam Film Festival. He then directed “Aquarius” (2016), premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, “Bacurau” (2019), co-directed with Juliano Dornelles, winner of the jury prize at Cannes, and the documentary “Pictures of Ghosts” (2023).
