
Born in Asmara, Eritrea, in 1964. He graduated from New York University Film School. He made, among others, the documentaries, “Boatman” (1993), which was presented at the Sundance, Locarno, and Toronto film festivals. “Below Sea Level” (2008), which won an award in the Orizzonti section at the Venice International Film Festival, “El Sicario – Room 164” (2010), which won the critics’ prize in Venice. With “Sacro GRA” (2013), he won the Golden Lion at Venice, and with “Fire at Sea” (2016), he won the Golden Bear at Berlin and an Oscar nomination. He also directed “Notturno” (2020, 44th Mostra) and “In Viaggio: The Travels of Pope Francis” (2022).
