
Jean-Pierre was born in 1951 in the city of Engis, Belgium, while Luc was born in 1954 in Awirs. The brothers made numerous documentaries together between the 1970s and 1980s before starting to direct fictional feature films. They gained notoriety with "The Promise" (1996). In 1999, they directed "Rosetta", which won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. They also directed films such as "The Son" (2002), screened at the 26th Mostra, "The Child" (2005), screened at the 29th Mostra and also a Golden Palm winner, a segment of the collaborative feature "To Each His Own Cinema" (2007), screened at the 31st Mostra, "Lorna’s Silence" (2008), screened at the 32nd Mostra, "The Kid with a Bike" (2011), the opening title of the 35th Mostra and winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, "Two Days, One Night" (2014), screened at the 38th Mostra, "The Unknown Girl" (2016), screened at the 40th Mostra, "Young Ahmed" (2019, 43rd Mostra), winner of the best director award at Cannes, and "Tori and Lokita" (2022), Cannes 75th Anniversary Prize. At the 49th Mostra, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne presents the film "Young Mothers" and are honored with the Humanity Award.
