
Born in 1955, in New York City, he has a degree in philosophy from Columbia University. He was a journalist and began his career in film writing screenplays for independent films. His feature film debut as a director is “Sister, Sister” (1987), a Southern gothic mystery. He then went on to direct “Gods and Monsters” (1998), which earned him an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He became known for his work in musicals. Condon wrote the screen adaptation of “Chicago” (2002), for which he received an Oscar nomination, and co-wrote “The Great Showman” (2017) with Jenny Bicks, and he wrote and directed “Dreamgirls” (2006) and “Beauty and the Beast” (2017). Recently, he directed “Mr. Holmes” (2015), and “The Good Liar” (2019).
