Born in Nishapur, Iran, in 1973, he currently lives in Canada. Abdolreza Kahani graduated in acting and theater directing and worked briefly in television. He directed feature films such as “Empty Hands” (2004, 28th Mostra), “Twenty” (2009, 33rd Mostra), winner of the special jury prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, “Absolute Rest” (2015, 39th Mostra), “Abused” (2021), “You Won’t See Winter” (2022), “A Shrine” (2024), filmed entirely on a mobile phone — as was “Mortician” — and “Nina” (2024). Despite ongoing censorship in Iran, Kahani consistently challenges the regime through films that address bold and controversial themes, while maintaining an unwavering commitment to artistic freedom.
