In the 50s, as Mexico suffers modernization, Bonfilio asks his father to care for his family and heads north to make his fortune. Their conflicts are resolved when Bonfilio returns to say his last goodbye. Lucía, a prostitute, and Demetrio, a gravedigger, meet one night and their love will only be complete when Demetrio buries her. Don Julio, the old hacienda owner, is delirious with remorse when Cleotilde, whom he married for convenience, leaves him.
