A witness to the power of love that transcends the most tragic of circumstances, this is the story of teenager Eva and of her younger brother Lalalilu in the months that led to the deposition of Rumanian dictator Nicolau Ceausescu. Eva and her adventurous boyfriend, Alexandru, are in severe trouble when, accidentally, they break a bust of the dictator at school. Eva shoulders the bulk of the punishment: she is expelled from the Communist Youth Union and sent to a reformatory. There, she meets strange Andrei whose parents are accused of involvement in a plot against Ceausescu. They become friends. Eva plans to swim with him the length of the Danube, and so, to freedom, and starts to practise for her flight. Meanwhile, adorable Lalalilu is anxious about losing his baby teeth and also has great plans. With his friends, he dreams up lots of mischief. Looking far ahead, in fantasy, he imagines an attempt against Ceausescu who is soon to visit his school. Lalalilu wants vengeance for Eva having been sent away so far.
