THE WITMAN BOYS

Hungary

The Witman BoysA drama based on the book of the same name by writer Géza Csáth (1887-1919), one of the most controversial personalities in Hungarian literature before the First World War. With an eclectic background - neurologist, writer, and music critic - Csáth "dissects" the soul of his characters with the skill of a surgeon. It was this characteristic that led Director János Szász to adapt the story to the cinema. Following death of their parents, the two boys are under care of the mother, and this leads them to develop a world of their own, with rules devised on their own. They try to make sense of their lives and eventually find it in the shape of an attractive girl that is all they seek. At first, she is happy at the frequent visits from the two boys, but soon starts to demand that they bring her presents. In desperation, they find a box with jewelry in their mother's bedroom and they perceive it is the perfect present for their beloved. They are ready to do anything to get what they want. Even if it means killing their own mother.
