| TUPAMAROS | Germany |
Memory of the
Tupamaros, the most notorious of guerrilla movements that
flared up in Latin America and Europe as from the
sixties. The trajectory of the Tupamaros began in Uruguay
in 1963.From 1971 to 1986, the Tupamaros carried out 105
armed incursions to obtain resources to keep up their
political struggle. In 1995, they laid down arms and
became an integral part of Frente Ampla Uruguaia, which
included electing various representatives for National
Congress. This Hispano-Germanic documentary tells the
story of the group and presents interviews with former
guerrillas that today are mature, reticent personalities,
some with a consolidated political career and with many
curious reflections concerning this revolutionary past.
One of the most touching characters in the film is Pepe
Mujica, today at the age of 61 years and an exotic
representative in the struggle to abolish use of neckties
in Uruguay. His main activity, very well exploited in the
film, is to grow flowers - according to him, a form of
opposition in his country where the countryside was
destroyed and dehumanized by the invasion of cattle and
sheep. There are three million inhabitants against
11 million head of cattle and 20 million sheep. We
invented the urban guerrilla because in the country there
were no more people, concludes Mujica. |
