Land of the Sea documents the
life of the people who live in the bays, islands and
swamps of the state of Paraná, Brazil. Narrated by the
islanders, it shows their work, ways, festivals, music
and beliefs. Their lives are based on the fishing cycles
and marked by the lack of electricity, the tides, the
winds, the sun and the moon phases.Pilgrims
travel all over the region, singing and playing handmade
instruments like the fiddle and the viola. This
tradition, as well as the cure with medicinal herbs, the
worship of sea myths and the native understanding of
nature, are slowly disappearing. Swallowed by the
invading sea, houses, boats, entire fishing villages -
and cultures - are drowning.
