RIDING THE RAILS

USA

Riding the RailsDocumentary inspired in the book Boy and Girl Tramps of America that revives the story of the 'road kids'. In the thirties, soon after the Great American Depression, these kids would take to the road in search of a better place to live or, quite simply, to find a place where they could eat and then move on once more. Two hundred and fifty thousand teenagers are thought to have left home at this time, in flight from the misery and hunger that assailed their families. To make the documentary, directors placed advertisements in the American newspapers and magazines looking for persons who had had experiences of this type at that time. Over three thousand persons sent in letters. Ten of these stories are told in Riding the Rails.

Added to the statements were images on file and scenes from the film Wild Boys of the Road, by William Welman in 1993.
