Pedro Costa was born in Lisbon in 1959. He
quit his studies in History for a course in
editing and directing given by Antonio Reis, at
the Escola Superior de Cinema de Lisboa. He then
began to work as assistant director in several
Portuguese films. In 1987 he made his first short
film Cartas a Julia and a series of
children’s films for Portuguese TV. His
first feature O Sangue is from 1989. In 1994, he
directed Casa de Lava. Ossos is his third
feature.

Estrela
d’África a black neighborhood in the suburbs of
Lisbon. A child a few days old is to escape from death
several times. Tina, his young mother, takes him in her
arms and opens the gas mains. Rescued by his father, he
sleeps in the streets and drinks milk distributed as
charity. On two occasions he is almost betrayed for
despair, for love, for anything. Tina, however, cannot
forget her son and, with his street companions, she seeks
vengeance.A human and realistic drama that was awarded
the Prize for Best Photography at the Venice Festival,
1997.
