ORBIS PICTUS

Czech Republic

Orbis PictusThe heroine of the story is Tereza, a young girl of sixteen with a simple, infantile vision of the world. One day, she is forced to abandon school and so decides to leave for the capital in search of her mother.

She lives a thousand and one adventures and meets many people during the journey through the interior of the country. She meets a man whose job it is to destroy objects without knowing exactly why he is paid to carry out this function. She then takes part in a strange wedding ceremony where the bridegroom is not yet eighteen and the bride is almost fifty. The party reflects society with its grotesque and incomprehensible rituals.

On arriving at the capital, he finds his mother who mysteriously disappears after giving her advice. The dividing line between the real world and illusion is lost in the day-to-day difficulties and is dissolved in the absurd and in tragicomedy.
