Born in 1931, he studied drama and
literature in Waseda University in Tokyo as
assistant director from 1953 to 1958 at the
Shochiku Ofuna Studios. In 1957, he worked as
assistant for one of the most important directors
in Japan, Yasujiro Ozu, in the film Tokyo
Boshoku. He studied in depth filming
techniques and Ozu and Kenji Mizoguchi editing.
He directed his first film in 1960, and as from
then, has been making several productions in his
country.
