MOONLIGHT SERENADE

Japan

Moonlight SerenateThe city of Kobe is in flames. The buildings are destroyed, the shopping centers are transformed into an inferno. Chaos is everywhere. Keita Onda, sixty years old, sees on the television news of the earthquake that destroyed the city in 1995. While he watches today's news, he remembers another occasion in which he saw the city in flames: in 1945, during the war, on the island of Awaji, he witnessed the site being destroyed by bombs.

A short while later, Onda receives the ashes of his oldest son killed in battle in Kobe. In order to bury the boy's ashes in the city where he was born, Onda departs with the family to Miyazaki. The journey, more than a journey throughout the country devastated by war, is one way for the Onda family to learn about itself and about its reality.
