THE MINISTER OF STATE

Finland

The Minister of StateA romantic comedy that takes place in the north of Finland, in Sami. Based on a real story, the plot follows the trajectory of a man who uses a change in identity to gain the confidence of the residents of a village. In the process, he shows universal feelings such as greed, honesty, love, and humor. At the end of World War II, a man is found unconscious near Sagojokk, a village in remote Sami. He is a handsome man, some 30 years old who arouses curiosity and a certain reluctance on the part of the residents. Even unconscious, he possesses a strange force and power.

He subsequently explains he is a government representative, a minister of State who is there to advance agrarian reform. This is a dream to the residents, with the exception of land-owner Antti Neia who decides he will defend his properties at any cost, even if this is to mean killing the intruder. Safeguarded by the village and, in especial, by beautiful Marit, in love, he carries his plans ahead.

His farse is brought down when a second stranger arrives on site and discovers that he is a fraud. An ex-convict, the new foreigner blackmails the false minister, obliging him to assist him in extracting money from the villagers. However, friendship and trust shown by those at the site cause him to behave with dignity and honesty.
