| ARDENA, THE NEVER-NEVER LAND | Italy |
Andrea, a boy of
thirteen, leaves Milan and goes off on holiday with the
family to a small city near to the great lakes in the
north of Italy. To spend holidays in this paradise-like
site is a tradition every summer for Andrea's family. The child lives his happiest days there, enjoying this ideal scenery as a background to his discoveries and adventures. The family is something else again in his life: two couples of uncles and aunts, a host of cousins, parents and grandparents and, mainly, a grandmother with whom he shares an intense relationship, are part of this magic world. The matriarch is capable of spending all summer writing a poem, she talks to the trees and is going to leave her grandson all she knows about love. Summer 1969 - with music by Jimmy Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, scenes of man's arrival on the moon and political tension in Italy - mark a period of transformation for the boy. It is a time for discovery, disillusion, first kisses, and sadness. |
