THE CRAZY STRANGER

Romania-France

O Estrangeiro LoucoIn a station to the north of Budapest, Stephane, a young Frenchman repeatedly plays a song with the name of a woman. This music is an obssession to him, and he will take it to an unknown country to an encounter with a people destroyed: the Lutharians, gipsy musicians. On his journey, he has the protection of an old chief of the clan who helps him to enter this picturesque, violent but also amusing and fascinating world. Stephane falls in love with Sabine and, by degrees, finds her place among the gipsies of the strange Valachie. In a world surrounded by disdain and xenophobia on every side, he becomes the “mad” Parisian.Awarded a prize at the Locarno Festival, this touching story full of magic shows the gipsies within their own reality. A universe to which the young Parisian is no more than a visitor, a mere stranger who undoubtedly will undergo significant transformations in the course of his journey.
