"Food, sex,
diet and film". This is the slogan for this production by Park Chul-Soo, a chronicle
on urban life in Seoul. The plot explores the mysterious disappearance of a young resident
in apartment 302 in a modern housing scheme in the city. A policeman is called upon to
investigate the case and swiftly realizes the connection between the girl who has
disappeared and the resident in apartment 301. These two, known only by the number of
their respective apartments, had a strange relationship: 301, an amateur cook, had taken
it upon herself to prepare meals for 302, a frail woman with nausea at the mere sight or
smell of food. Told as from a series of
flashbacks carefully prepared, as were the dishes for 301, the story describes the bizarre
relationship between both women and reveals the secret of what may have happened to 302.
By establishing connections between food, sex, and eating disorders, the director
generates sombre suspense while depicting an unusual portrait of modern living in the
great cities. |
